Location
Located near the coast of Caithness on the very Northeast corner of mainland Scotland..
Description
A riparian planting scheme of diverse native broadleaves along the banks of a SSSI riparian habitat and salmon river. The project will expand forest cover along the banks of this spectacular river.
Mixture of 77% new planting and 23% natural tree regeneration arising from the seed stock from the mature established woods that are adjacent. Species include Downy birch, Sessile oak, Goat willow, alder, rowan, Scots pine, hazel and wild cherry, bird cherry and aspen.
Conservation Outcomes
This is project is primarily aimed at benefiting wild Atlantic salmon, a species under serious threat. It also benefits: otters, dippers, brown trout, osprey and white tailed eagles.
A key feature of the project is the reintroduction of aspen, a riparian tree species once common in Scotland and which approached extinction there. Given the project enhances water quality, it also benefits the near shore marine environment which is one of the most diverse in the UK.
