Ruallan Forest

Location
The mountainside project is located near to the Culloden Battlefield in Inverness.
Design
The low density planting Scheme mimics ancient Caledonian Forest. A variety of broadleaf trees have been planted: Silver birch, Downy birch, rowan, alder, hazel, Sessile oak, Goat willow, Grey willow. There are ancient, 'granny' Scots pines within the project enclosure. Natural regeneration is already well underway with the granny pines generating seedlings. The design also allows for open moorland for grouse, retention of wet meadow areas, dry meadows and for archaeology.
Conservation Features
The project connects two large areas of established conifer forest that are home to Red deer, Red squirrels, Pine Martens, Parrot crossbills and many more species. The landscape includes otters, ospreys, Golden eagles, Sea eagles, curlews, Black grouse, Red grouse and many more. The project helps to create a corridor between three known populations of Scottish wildcats.
