Fort William Forest

Fort William Forest is located slightly north of its namesake and is immediately next to the Caledonian Canal which connects Loch Ness with Loch Eil and the estuary. Its landscape context is between Loch Ness and Ben Nevis – the UK’s largest Loch and tallest mountain.
It comprises a diverse, native planting scheme and will be managed as a permanent nature reserve. The planting scheme mimics the original, wild Caledonian forest included Scots pine, Sessile oak, holly, wild cherry, downy birch and rowan. Project establishment is achieved via both afforestation at scale and natural regeneration arising from seed-dispersal from established trees.
The watercourse within the project is Allt Coire Chraoibhe with a spectacular waterfall. The project is immediately adjacent to ancient woodland and which we’re expanding upon.
The land is owned by a crofter committed to sustainability. He is keen to return the hillside to its former splendour and is committed to regenerative farming in the land below.
The project is located between five Sites of Special Scientific Interest! As a result, it creates an exceptional conservation buffer and expands habitat for rare and red-listed wildlife.
